Terry and Julie in the Cellar Door

The Orange Mountain Wine company is owned and operated by Terry and Julie Dolle.

Our vineyards were first established in Manildra in 1997 and in Orange in 2001.

Viognier was first planted at our Manildra vineyard in 1999. The variety appears to have a natural affinity with the unique vineyards site and its unique soils, producing richly flavoured wines that display intense varietal characters.

I remember the first time I spotted the Manildra vineyard of Terry and Julie Dolle of Orange Mountain Wines.

On the western side of Manildra, it is on a rise as you begin the climb up the Goobangs. The site slopes to the south and is all the better for it - being a fair bit lower than Orange, the site minimises northern exposure.

At the time (as I was driving to Parkes) I thought somebody brave must be battling the elements (particularly drought) to try and develop a vineyard on the stony, granite soil.

That was 1999 and having seen several Orange Mountain signature shiraz/viognier blends from Manildra over the years, I have no doubt that the bravery was worth it.

Justin Byrne, in The Good Life, Central Western Daily, 12 May 2004.

The Orange Mountain Vineyard established in 2001 is in sight of the local Mount Canobolas, just 10km west of Orange and markets under the Orange Mountain label. Managing director Terry Dolle's original planting in 1997, west of Manildra, is where he grows Viognier and sells under the "Manildra" label.

The vineyard is on the edge of the cool climate boundary in the Central Ranges wine growing region and focuses on producing low volume, high quality wine grapes.

Terry researched the wine grape industry extensively before deciding to try something different. "There are thousands of varieties but I feel Viognier can deliver something special on these soils. They are of the Duladerry volcanic type similar to the Barossa Valley."
